At Georgia Tech we have one Export Control program for all activities at or by the Institute but as you can imagine, there are different systems, procedures and portfolios for Resident Instruction (RI) and Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). Over the next few months you may notice changes in the export program, separating RI & GTRI training, to better facilitate an increase compliance while reducing administrative burden for our faculty, staff and students! GTRI faculty, staff and students should consult the Export Control for GTRI page for GTRI specific training details.
Georgia Tech offers a monthly export control education course. The course curriculum includes information about:
- Federal laws governing export control as they relate to Georgia Tech and our research program
- How to contain an uncontrolled research program within the fundamental research exemption
- How to protect research programs that fall outside the fundamental research exemption with a Technology Control Plan (TCP)
This course satisfies the annual training that is required for any researcher working on a project that contains a TCP. All courses take place in the Research Administration Building training room.
COVID – Have the In Person training requirements changed?
YES. While your TCP may state that you are required to attend training in person – we have changed all Export Control training to a web-based format. Please register for the next available class and you will receive a WebEx invitation before the training session.
GIT Academic personnel should register via RosterTech: https://training.osp.gatech.edu/.
GTRI personnel should register via Quest: http://quest.gtri.gatech.edu/
My training is due this month but the next available Export Control & TCP training is the same time as my class. Are there other options?
Yes, we always have options available. We generally try to stagger the courses so they are offered at different days and times each month. If you are due for training in March but the next Export Control & TCP training that you can attend is in April – simply register for the April class and attend. If none of the scheduled training sessions will work, contact us at export@gatech.edu and will work with you to get training scheduled at a time you can attend.
My training is due next month but I will be away for a semester abroad. Are there other options?
Yes, we always have options available. You can renew your export training prior to your semester abroad or you can attend when you return to the Atlanta campus. Keep in mind that you may not work on or access export controlled projects while on your semester abroad. Be sure to plan in advance and work with your Computer Support Representative and/or Central OIT to obtain a clean travel laptop.
Why is the Export Training for the Academic/Resident Instruction (via RosterTech) separate from the GTRI training (via Quest LMS)? Are the regulations different?
No, the regulations are Federal Law and are the same for everyone. While we are all “One GT” – we offer customized training to better serve your needs. By offering separate courses, we can focus more on the environment, systems, resources that will be used in your research program.
