This page includes updates and FAQs specific for GTRI. You may wonder with the new slogan of “One Georgia Tech” why there is a separate export page for GTRI.
At Georgia Tech we have one Export Control program for all activities at or by the Institute but as you can imagine, there are different systems, procedures and portfolios for Resident Instruction (RI) and Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI). Over the next few months you may notice changes in the export program, separating RI & GTRI training, to better facilitate an increase compliance while reducing administrative burden for our faculty, staff and students!
We now offer GTRI specific export training in GTRI Locations – which will allows us to customize the materials for GTRI. The GTRI Export class rotates between GTRI Headquarters (GTRI Conference Center - 14th Street) and GTRI Cobb County Research Facility (CCRF). In an effort reduce the number of systems GTRI Personnel use for registering and tracking training data, we are piloting enrollment using the Quest LMS system already used for your other GTRI Training.
We have received a few questions about the ongoing requirements for Export Control Training of GTRI personnel and have developed the FAQs below.
Are GTRI personnel (faculty, staff and students) are required to attend Export Control Training?
All GTRI personnel who potentially have access to Export Controlled data/information/materials or are responsible for the administration of export controlled activities (such as financial managers, coordinators) are required to attend annual training.
Why is the “GTRI Export Compliance Training” being separated from the Academic / Resident Instruction training? Are the regulations different?
No, the regulations are Federal Law and are the same for everyone. While we are all One GT, at times GTRI is different in terms of the environment, systems, resources and research portfolio. Customizing the training for GTRI will allow us to better serve the needs of the GTRI research community.
COVID – Have the In Person training requirements changed?
YES. While your TCP may state that you are required to attend training in person – we have changed all Export Control training to a web-based format. Please register for the next available class and you will receive a WebEx invitation before the training session.
GIT Academic personnel should register via RosterTech: https://training.osp.gatech.edu/.
GTRI personnel should register via Quest: http://quest.gtri.gatech.edu/
Where/how do I register for training?
In efforts to reduce the number of systems GTRI personnel have to use for registering and tracking training data, we are piloting enrollment via the Quest LMS system you already use for your other GTRI Training. Only GTRI personnel can enroll in Quest LMS so this should reduce the confusion about which classes are for Resident Instruction (RI) or Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI).
I am located at a GTRI field office or do not work in the Atlanta area. How do I attend the in-person training?
You can attend the in-person training remotely via the web. Please select a session to attend from the Quest LMS system and email the GTRI Training team at gtritraining.ask@gtri.gatech.edu to request to attend remotely.
I am located in the Baker building on campus. Can I attend the in-person training via the web like the field office personnel?
Not at this time. Please register to attend an in-person training via Quest LMS.
How can I check my training data?
GTRI personnel can check their training data in Quest LMS.
How often is training required?
The training is an Annual requirement. As described in the GTRI Master TCP, all GTRI personnel that work on or have access to export controlled information are required to participate in annual training. While the frequency has not changed and remains an annual requirement, the course offerings and platforms available have changed over the past few years and will continue to change to meet the needs of the Institute. The goal of the training is to educate and provide awareness to GTRI personnel of their responsibilities to safeguard and prevent inadvertent or inappropriate disclosure of controlled items, information or technical data.
Is this a New training requirement?
No, the annual training requirement has not changed since 2009. Is annual every 365 days? I have 3 months of work travel when I am due for training. What if the next class at my location would put me at 390 days?
Remote options are available for individuals not in the Metro Atlanta area (see below and/or contact export@gatech.edu for assistance). The annual training is not a hard deadline that prohibits you from working when you reach day 366. If you are on travel ad cannot take the training before you leave town - simply register for the next available session upon your return.

I have heard there will be 1) live in-person and 2) online (refresher) options in 2020. Is this correct?
In-person sessions are available each month as described above. To see the GTRI class schedule and register for GTRI Export training classes - please visit Quest LMS.
On-line refresher training modules will be released in 2020! The GTRI specific online refresher classes will be available later this year (Fall)!
With both in-person and online options – how do I know which to take?
In-person training is required every other year. You may use the online refresher in alternate years.
I prefer live training sessions. Do I have to take online training for my refresher or may I attend in-person each year?
You are always welcome to attend in-person training as your annual training (you are also welcome to attend more frequently if you would like).
What if I want an advanced or specialized export training session for my team or lab?
Yes, we can do that! We are always happy to offer custom training for your team (and yes, it can count as your annual training too). As we move forward with the online training, we plan to offer additional modules to meet the different needs of our research portfolio.
